Laila found herself settling into life at Trelis Weyr better than she had expected. It had been a few months since her arrival, she had made a few friends, and she had managed to familiarize herself with most areas of the Weyr, so that she was able to complete all of her chores with time to spare and almost never got lost, even when exploring the more out of the way caverns. She was quite proud of herself, actually, when she thought about everything she had learned so far. And now she had some free time to kill.
She had thought about visiting the Hatching Sands to view the clutch, but she eventually decided against it. Sure, she would like to see the eggs and maybe even play the guessing game with some of the other spectators--which egg contains what?--however, she was sure the stands would be crowded with candidates eager to do just that. She wasn't so impatient that she couldn't wait until the Touching to see them up close.
So instead, Laila decided to extend her knowledge to the lands surrounding the Weyr, particularly the forest. She was sure to end up in them sooner or later, so it couldn't hurt to explore them now and get a mental picture of the lay of the land. (The fact that she would most likely be utilizing her mental images on dragonback, which would require an entirely different point of view, was at the moment lost on her.) Anyway, that was why she was wandering around the edge of the forest, still in sight of Trelis, and heading in no particular direction. She wasn't normally the outdoors type, true, but it was late in the evening now and pleasantly cool and dry outside. There was still more than enough light to find her way; true dark was about an hour away. She was taking the opportunity to enjoy the weather in between thunderstorms--she had even donned sensible trousers for the occasion, rather than her fancier skirts.
