It was a nice day. It felt like a good day that was beginning. It hadn't taken much encouragement to have Katarina running out from chores to walk on her hands along the ravine. Most people would have cried out in alarm or tried to pull her back, but Kat had never bothered with taking others with her on her adventures. Of course, the first few times she'd come along this track, she'd been wary. Testing the ground under her weight, where the edges of the path were, where the ground endedand where it lowered and rose. Now she knew the path by heart, and she gave a light hearted giggle as she flipped herself onto her feet without a care.
The trick was, she tried to explain, to trust your body. Kitty knew her body, she knew what it could do, she knew what it couldn't. She knew that she couldn't do certain things, that she couldn't explain the colour blue, for example, or what a colour was, but she didn't need to. Because she could tell someone what damp earth felt like, or weak ground, or the difference between footsteps. It was just a different set of skills.
Of course, the way did change, and the girl did give a rather loud cuss as she tripped over a stone in her way. From that moment, she moved much more cautiously, wriggling her bare feet into the dirt before touching the edge of the warm water that was the springs. Easing herself down beside the springs, she rubbed her foot sulkily, fingers pressing briefly against the bruised flesh before leaning back.
She could hope for company right? That was what she'd come looking for.
