The night was quiet. Unusually so, perhaps, if anyone had been around to notice it. However, the only one around the herdbeast pens at this time of night was one solitary green dragoness, and she was not inclined to pay attention to the level of noise around her. She was too hungry for that, and she could smell the herdbeasts right in front of her, even if she couldn't quite see them in the dark. The dragon prowled closer.
Actually, they seemed a little too close, considering she was still outside the fence that penned them. The herdbeasts were moving around a lot, making low noises of agitation, and they seemed a lot more widespread than they should be. Her foot landed on a broken pile of wood, and she gave a hiss of pain. Well, shards. That had been the fence. This wasn't good.
Kohenkyoth gathered herself together, still nursing her injured foot a little, and gave a low, rumbling roar of annoyance. B'den! My food's running loose. Something's gotten into the pen, and it wasn't me! It was still hard to see anything concrete, but the herdbeasts were definitely running loose, thanks to the large section of fencing that had been destroyed. Kohenkyoth couldn't tell how far the damage stretched, but it was serious.
B'den was jerked awake by his dragon's call for attention, and he yawned, trying to piece together what had happened. Food was loose? Something with a pen? Oh, the herdbeast pens. Something had happened to the herdbeast pens? He cursed softly and hurriedly got dressed before rushing out to join his dragon. "What are you doing, getting a midnight snack? You couldn't just wait until tomorrow?" he said, lightly scolding the green.
The green hissed irritably. I didn't do this. It was already like this. And I hurt my foot. I've suffered enough already, you get someone to fix this. She said nothing more, but leaped onto the nearest cow, which gave a startled moan before it was silenced for good by the hungry dragon. Kohenkyoth settled down to enjoy her meal.
B'den rolled his eyes. "You're being more difficult than usual," he muttered. "Getting proddy again?" Kohenkyoth, as he had suspected, did not deign to answer him. The dragon's activities had just stirred up the already spooked herd, sending animals scurrying in every direction. B'den didn't try to go after them. He'd leave that job for the Weyrfolk, maybe some of the candidates. "Also, thank you so much for making the situation worse by scaring them again, Kohenkyoth," he said dryly. "Where can I find the Journeyman Beastcrafter who's on duty?"
Still chomping down on her meal, Kohenkyoth gave a careless shrug of her wing. I don't know. Somewhere nearby, hopefully. Maybe he or she has already heard the commotion.
Yeah. Big help that was. B'den heaved a sigh and went off to look for the beastcrafter. Hopefully they could tell him what had caused the breach, and whether it was something that the riders of Rindell would have to be worried about.
