BRAE
Name: Braekkar/Braenylla
Pronunciation: Bri (as in bright)-car/nilla
Age: 20 turns
Season Born In: Spring
Gender: Female *Posing as Male*
Sexuality: Bisexual
Appearance:
Brae can be interesting, if only because you never know what you're going to get. The first and foremost thing to clear up here, is that she is a girl. She has all the parts, and she will be all too glad to prove that to you if she has to as well. However, she often must dress as a boy, and act as one, in order to work in her craft. Unfortunately, she found a ride on a boat with a superstitious old man who needs a reality check. Anyway, because of this little misfortune of hers, she has two fairly distinct, though not completely differing, styles of appearance.
As a girl Brae is fairly simple in what she wants and has. Seldom will she be found in clothing that does not allow her movement or freedom to get messy. Fine silks are just not this one's cup of tea. The same goes for bright colors. Brae has never had use for them, or marks to be honest. No, the best friend for Brae is a heavy-durable cotton like fabric blend that is spun into a dull looking tunic, or occasionally a simple dress. They don't always fit her body, which is about 5ft 8in with rounded curves and muscle, but they work well enough. Leggings are another close ally to her as well, not costing as much as pants, but certainly doing the job. Often when she has worked as a drudge, and whenever she still has to do chores, she actually prefers to go without shoes. They just feel incredibly uncomfortable to her, and when she does have to they're the same worn out boots that she uses on the fishing boat.
As a boy, Brae is somewhat more complex in her style, but only because it was what she could get her hands on. Again though, nothing is too fancy or colorful, being heavy-duty vests, tunics, shirts and yes, even pants. Oh, and aren't those a glorious pair of pants as well. She only has one good one, the other has patched just about everywhere, but they're wearable at least...if not a bit too big. That's what belts are for though, right? Occasionally a bit of grey or blue, maybe even a dull green can find its way through the vests here, but it's rare more or less and she often does not even pay it mind. It is as a boy, working on the boat, that she wears her boots most often. They're a fairly aweful pair though; two sizes too big, worn out and with laces that are frayed at the end.
Whether as a boy or girl, Brae's consistent features are soft and definitely feminine. Occasionally she gets trouble for it when posing as a fisher, but she just plays down her age a bit and tries to lower her voice just slightly from its normal middle to high alto, and it's not all that bad. Her face is somewhat rounded, and she has prominent cheekbones, though they are high and angled like some more "delicate" beauties are. Her face is pretty, but in a plain and simple sort of way. There's nothing too striking, which she is thankful for, but if you look at it a second or third time that's when you realize where the beauty can be hiding.
Her hair is long, and even when she poses as a boy she keeps it that way, she just tucks it up in a bun under her hat and then pins the hat down so it doesn't blow away. So far she's been lucky with that, though she's considered cutting it just to try and cut her some slack. Though she likes being clean, she honestly does not mind being messy, and truth be told it is easier to pretend to be a boy when you're a little roughed and scuffed up anyhow. So, generally her skin is a bit mucky and has grime on it. When it is clean though, it is a lighter tan color, not pale, but not incredibly dark either. Her eyes however are much darker, ranging on a klah-hued brown.
Personality:
- Sarcastic
- Headstrong
- Works hard for what she wants
- Determined in what she does/how she thinks
- Opposite of lazy
Just like with her appearance, there are many sides to Brae, and some have to do more with who she really is, while others have to do with who she pretends to be. However, some of the common ground between both roles lays in the fact that she is as stubborn as a runnerbeast. This girl just refuses to give up, and it's not even that she believes she is always right. Brae knows that sometimes she's going to be wrong, in fact she guesses that she's probably wrong about half the time if not more. However, when she knows she can do something, when she wants to help, she will keep trying until she is down and out for the count. Beat her down, she'll just jump right back up for round two, or three, or six.
Add to that stubborn streak that she does have a mouth on her, and you get someone that is nothing less than spirited. It's not that she will be continuing to try way past the point that she should stop, but she'll be mouthing you off all the while. Most of it won't make sense, but that's just fine with her. She can be incredibly sarcastic as well, and one of her favorite games to play is to state the obvious just because some silly little child of a man or woman isn't catching on fast enough. Despite this however, Brae knows when to listen to her superiors, and she listens well. The girl may not agree with what's going on, but turns living as a drudge have made it clear who ends up in charge and who ends up cleaning up the mess after. - Blunt and childish at times
- Can be snarky and spirited
- Stands up to others, doesn't tolerate bullies
Besides being sarcastic, Brae is also just plain blunt. She says it how she sees it man, it's just the way she is. There is no filter between her senses and her mouth, she barely even considers what it is she's saying. Again, turns as a drudge and then some time on a fishing boat just tends to make things more or less equal game. There is not "politically correct" way of speaking for her, so don't even try to reason. It is generally during this bluntness, which also by the way can become lewdness, that Brae tends to get a bit of a snarky attitude. She may not know what she's doing all the time, and she may be okay with backing down and out when she must, but boy can this girl give some nice snark. She won't let you go without getting a dig in or two, and a fight is never over until someone concedes, be that with words or fists.
She also hates bullies, plain and simple. Too many times Brae had been on the underhand of that situation, and too many times has she been forced to listen to words that didn't mean a single damn thing to her. They didn't hurt any less, she just got used to it. That doesn't mean that she condoles it when it comes to others though. If someone is being a bully, she usually aims to take them down a peg or two. The only time that this differs is if she can see that said bully is doing things because they themselves are in trouble. Then things change, and she becomes determined to help in anyway she can, whether the person wants her to or not. - Gentle-hearted
- Very open with people she knows
- Great-full for anything and everything she receives in life
- Loves children
In the end, Brae is just very gentle-hearted. This is especially in the normal sense of when she isn't pretending to be Braekkar. Brae just loves the idea of love, and life and happiness. She wants romance, she wants joy and she wants a good life. Now, a good life doesn't have to be every little thing that others may have, and it certainly isn't overly much. No, Brae just wants someone who loves her and a job that gives her some marks in her pocket, and children to dote on and care for. That's it, she just wants happiness. Additionally, Brae is incredibly open with people she knows and trusts. However, this is with people she knows and trusts, meaning that newcomers or people that have not gained her appreciation will not receive the same kind of treatment in the slightest.
Anything and everything Brae gets in life ends up gaining her thanks though, and even the smallest offering of kindness is a huge deal in her eyes. That can be a flower given by a child, a mark tossed her way, or just a piece of bread that someone is willing to share. All of it deserves some sort of thank-you and acknowledgement, because it is one less thing that she is going without. Similarly, friends do not go without her love and tender care. She is loyal as can be to those she trusts, and once you get her to be your friend, it is difficult to shake that loyalty. - Loner type with new people
- Dislikes people that she thinks have it easy
- Tries to understand the why's and how's that come with the people she meets
When around someone she is not familiar with however, Brae can be downright unsociable. She doesn't go out of her way normally to discuss things with others, and unless she just really feels down and needing company, or someone else starts the conversation first, she generally doesn't say anything. One type of person she never will easily enjoy being around though are the soft and spoiled folk that were born into a simple life without want or need. She envies them mainly, and any time one of them says how bad their not-so-terrible life is, Brae has difficulty biting her tongue from saying just how wrong they are.
When she does meet someone new that she finds some interest in, Brae goes to great lengths to understand them. She wants to know how they do things, why they do them, what they are all about. It is important to her that she understand another person's motivations before she can really trust and befriend them. The more she can find out the better in her book, and a "good friend" should not keep secrets from another "good friend" either. However, she tends to not really have many of these and so has no problem withholding or using information she covets. - Pretends to be a boy for work
- Sometimes she gets too into her pretending and forgets she's a girl
- Feels it's easier as a boy, doesn't think there is as much pressure on them as there is with girls
Even though Brae is most definitely a girl, she does have to parade as a boy for her work. The captain of the ship she was able to get on to get marks did not allow women because he believed it was bad luck. Even though it is not an official apprenticeship, it is something at least and Brae knows that it is one of the only ways she can gather enough marks to get an actual apprenticeship.
Occasionally though she spends so much time as a boy on the ship that she forgets who she really is. It does not happen frequently, but months out on sea can make it very hard to go back to who she really is. It doesn't help that Brae finds it easier to be a boy than a girl, finding that there is somewhat less pressure on them. As a boy she can do almost anything without fear of being ridiculed or restricted, and though she still adores the idea of being a strong feminine figure, Brae slips back into her other charade easily when she just wants to get away from it all for a while. - Feels sorry for people who cannot stand up for themselves, but also dislikes them because it frustrates her easily
- Dislikes the riders of the new colors because they have allowed such bad images and tension to form around them
- Feels sorry for the colors themselves because it's just how they are born
The one thing that will tick off Brae faster than anything else are people who cannot stand up for themselves. She does feel sorry for them, however being from a pretty low life herself, she knows that it's all about what you make of it. You don't have to stay in a place that makes you miserable, and if you do then either something is wrong or you're not trying hard enough. People like this frustrate her easily, especially when it is combined with her other largely disliked type of person, a whiny-self entitled sort.
She doesn't really like the riders of the new colors, but the dragons and where themselves she does enjoy being around. She feels sorry for them since they cannot help how they were born. However, the riders could have changed how the approached the situation, and for that and the bad things that followed for the majority of the population of new colors she has no love for them. The one thing that she can maybe tolerate are new color riders who actually do try to be a part of the Weyr as if they rode the normal five colors.
Family:
No known family.
Location: Trelis
Rank: Dragon and Wher
History:
Braenylla was born in one of Ista's holds, dropped off and never really taken by anyone. Even those in the creche were too busy with the collective group of 'brats to really give any one individual attention. Little by little however she became okay with that. Brae just needed a few friends here, and a job to do there, and some fresh air to breath now and again and she was happy. It was a simple life, a lower life than some would be okay with.
As a drudge, she was raised around the darker parts of Pern, always knowing about them but never really getting into them. She knew about the little scandal here and there, and later on how some Holds fought others without the Weyrs knowing, how some would hire people to take care of problems. She understood the truth of politics, but Brae stood away from it. She was a fly on the wall, always there but never seen and she liked it that way. The world she was interested in was not in the shadows, but in the light so to speak.
She wanted to earn what she lived off of, and she worked hard to feel like she deserved any kindness she received. By the time she was an older teenager she had started to grow weary of the treatment given to drudges. They were the unwanted, the low, the scum, the ones to be pushed around and used and in some cases abused. The horror stories were not ones she had to live usually, but they rang true nonetheless in the girl's ears.
So, she began to venture from the hold more and more. It was one of the ports that the fishers went in and out of, and during on trip to the docks to help get fish for that night's meal, she ran into a sailor. It was an older man, a kind man if not somewhat gruff. Dressed in pants and with her hair up in a hat, she could almost pass off as a younger, somewhat feminine, boy. The sailor let her help with a few things, and the captain wondered if the "boy", for he presumed that was what she was, would like to come away from the hold and go on the seas. Jumping at the chance, and only with the old sailor knowing who she really was, she posed a pre-teenage boy on his way to Trelis to help at Sollace Hold and the Weyr.
It was on one of her journeys to the Weyr with fish they had gotten that Brae ended up being searched, though having spent so much time on the seas as a boy, her mind was firmly set on that charade. The dragon, not too bright of one, picked up on the surface thoughts and announced her as being a male candidate, and so now for that as well she must play her act, not wanting the truth to get back to the captain in case the hatching does not go her way.
