Jisene sighed in exasperation. 'It might not be the same for the other candidates, but I've always found it easier to learn from watching the action be carried out than from reading something. I know my letters, and I can read easily, but taking something from a book and using it...?'
She shook her head, frowning as she stared at the page. 'For example, just here. It says to use oil to soften your dragon's hide, and that's it. It doesn't say what kind of oil, or how to use it, if you have to make it yourself, nothing. You're just... left with that one bit. How do I take that tiny bit of information and use it...?'

Pandora blinked at Jisene as she spoke, not really sure what she meant. I don’t understand. I was never a candidate, I never had to read any of these. She shook her head and looked up at Guarximuth, who just shook his head at her. He didn’t know any more about it then she did after all. She looked back down at Jisene and waited for her to expand on what she had said. Guarximuth listened intently, wondering if His was going to learn something new, though he wasn’t getting his hopes up.
Yes, you use oil, and if I remember correctly the Weyrling Master teaches you all of that after you impress. You don’t have to make it yourself, but I assume you can, though most of the riders I know just buy their oil. Pandora shrugged her shoulders as she spoke, she had never really thought too much about what was in the oil she used on Guarximuth’s hide. She looked up at him, and he crooned down at her. Do not worry mine Pandora, I would have told you if something in the oil was harming my hide. He gently nudged his rider with his muzzle as he spoke.

Jisene managed a small, but exasperated, smile. 'It just means that I find it easier to learn new things if I'm shown how to do them, that's all. And as for the rest...'
She managed to keep from sighing again. 'Buying oil might be a good idea, but what if your dragon likes a particular scent in their oil and you have to blend it yourself...? How would you go about doing that? That's what I mean, I suppose. Maybe I should be leaving these things until after I bond with a dragonet, but...'
She pushed the few strands of hair that hung freely around her face back behind her hair. 'I like to learn things, to do something new. It's either that or contact my mother and ask her to send my old spinning wheel here for me.' She wrinkled her nose at the thought-while she had been a fair hand at the task, she hadn't enjoyed it one bit.

Pandora nodded her head at Jisene’s words, understanding how she felt. Pandora had always been a hands-on learner, and probably always would be. I don’t think I’ve ever met a rider that has put a scent in their dragon’s oil before. She raised an eyebrow at the girl as she spoke, wondering why anyone would really want to change the scent of their dragon. She for one, rather enjoyed the familiar scent of her dragon. Guarximuth rumbled with draconic laughter, finding this whole thing quite funny, though, he didn’t understand why anyone would want to change their smell either.
Why would you want a spinning wheel? Pandora looked at Jisene like the girl had suddenly gone crazy. If you want something to do I’m sure you can just ask and someone will give you something to do. Pandora was starting to wonder if maybe Jisene had been out under the sun a tad bit too long as she spoke. Guarximuth tilted his head to the side and regarded the two humans curiously. He shared his riders’ confusion about the spinning wheel, though he didn’t really know what a spinning wheel was, to him it didn’t sound all that amusing.

Jisene couldn't help but smile in agreement. 'I hate having nothing to do. At home on Father's farm, I always had something to keep me busy, even if it was just feeding our animals. Here...'
She shook her head. 'Here, I go to do something, and often find it's already been done by someone else. I suppose I could start a herb garden, but the kitchens already have one. Another would just be too much. So, I read instead. And find myself frustrated constantly.'
She glared down at the book, her stubbornness starting to rear its head. 'I will get through it, though. Mother did not call me stubborn for nothing!'

Pandora nodded her head as she listened to Jisene’s words. She knew all about being bored and wanting something to do, though, nowadays she had someone to keep her busy. From what I’ve heard from other candidates and riders that were candidates, that’s typically how candidacy goes. Though, you could always sign up for clean-up. Pandora knew it wasn’t the best job in the world, cleaning up dragon refuse, but at least it was something to do other than reading. Guarximuth snorted and shook his head at the thought of cleaning the dragon latrines.

Jisene's face went green at the thought. She'd had that thought herself, and would have gone through with it-if it hadn't been for the smell of the place. Not even the stench of the manure heap back home had been as bad as that smell!
She shook her head firmly, causing the braid running down her back to bounce violently with the movement. 'Dolphins of the Sea, no! I've already tried that, and I will never go back there again. Once was bad enough! I'd rather fall into the muck heap back home than go there again!' Her cheeks were now dead white at the remembered smell, and she took a few deep breathes to try and calm herself down.
Now calm again, she had regained her color, and was able to relax a little. Despite that, her hand shook a little as she pushed back a strand of hair.
'It's not that I'm afraid of the work, but... the smell... I'm sorry, Guarximuth, I mean no offence to any dragon, but the smell from those latrines is unbearable, even for a former farm girl.'

Pandora couldn’t help but laugh as Jisene’s face went green at her suggestion; it had to have been the funniest sight she had ever seen. Guarximuth jumped, almost knocking Pandora down in doing so, at the sudden outburst from his rider. Nothing is funny about getting sick mine Pandora. His gruff voice booming in Pandora’s head. I’m sorry but it Was funny Guarximuth. Pandora glared up at her dragon for reprimanding her, she really didn’t think she had done anything wrong by laughing about something she remembered quite well from her time as a Weyrling.
Just wait till you get your own dragon and you have to cut up the meat small enough so it doesn’t choke, and you get a nice whiff of their breath, then you’ll be glad for the latrines. Pandora had a look of disgust on her face as she spoke, remembering that first strong whiff of Guarximuth’s rancid breath. Guarximuth turned his swirling gaze on Pandora, and snorted on her, feeling quite smug in the fact that he had eaten just a few moments before the two of them had come to the Weyrbowl, and had met Jisene. Pandora gaged and turned away from her dragon, trying to catch a fresh breath of air.

Jisene watched as Guarximuth breathed over Pandora, who now looked a little green herself. She'd been about to laugh with her, but now she was more concerned with making sure Pandora was all right.
She'd gotten a whiff of Guarximuth's breath herself, and while it hadn't been pretty, it wasn't quite as bad as the latrines had been. 'Are you all right, Pandora...? You look a bit ill...' She was on her feet instantly, and would have been over with the older woman if it hadn't been for her dragon still hovering over her slightly.

Yeah I’m alright…I’m just glad he likes to eat fruit. It dulls the smell of the rotting meat. Pandora shook her head and pulled out a rag from her pocket, lifted it up to her nose, and took a nice long whiff. Guarximuth rumbled with draconic laughter as he lifted his head away. He knew that his breath wouldn’t have affected his rider so much, if she didn’t have a full stomach. No matter how strong Pandora is, or wants to be, she will never be able to stomach the smell of rotting meat mixed with whatever fruit her dragon decides to have for a snack.

Jisene blinked. A giggle shoved its way out, and she quickly clapped her hands over her mouth. Unable to hold it in, however, she soon found herself laughing her head off.
"F... fruit?! He likes to eat... fruit! Ahahaha, that's the last thing I was expecting...!" Now doubled over, Jisene tried frantically to stop the laughter racking her frame. Tears gathered in her eyes as she took a deep breath, looked up at Guarximuth, and gave in to the giggles once more.

Pandora lifted an eyebrow at Jisene as the girl started giggling, then seemed to start laughing so hard Pandora thought the girl might hurt herself. She didn’t really understand what was so funny, but apparently something the rider and dragon had done, was very amusing to this candidate. Ra looked up at Guarximuth when Jisene finally told them what was apparently so funny. I admit it isn’t all that normal for a dragon to like fruit, but I still don’t see what’s so funny. Her arms were crossed over her chest and she was looking down at Jisene, who was doubled over laughing. Guarximuth snorted and lightly nudged the girl with his brown muzzle, sharing his riders confusion.

Jisene squeaked in surprise when Guarximuth nudged her. It was gentle, but she was already off balance enough that it had her landing on the floor, all laughter now gone-apart from the odd sporadic giggle, that is.
Grinning up at them, she wiped a tear of laughter from her eye. "It's funny because you're meant to be a meat eater, Guarximuth. I've lived in the jungles alone for several days in a row quite a few times, and I never once saw a meat eater also eat fruit unless I already knew it did. That's why I started laughing."
The thought of a dragon eating fruit just seemed so funny to her for some reason, and she just couldn't quite figure out why.

Pandora shook her head at Guarximuth as the big brown nudged the girl just enough to cause her to fall back onto her rear with a squeak of surprise, though she was still giggling every once in a while. He still eats meat, it’s the main staple of his diet. He just enjoys the occasional apple as a snack for instance. Ra tilted her head to the side slightly as he spoke, confusion written all over her face as she spoke. Guarximuth crooned softly, understanding that the eating of fruit wasn’t something most dragons did, and as far as he knew, a fruit eating dragon had never been in any of the records before either. So he could understand that most people would be more than a little surprised at the fact.

Jisene had managed to get her giggles under control, now, and she smiled up at Guarximuth. "Well, there is that saying about apples, isn't there? "An apple a day, keeps the Healer away". Or something like that, at least. I'm sorry if I upset you, Guarximuth."
Getting up, she dusted herself off, still smiling. "It was just unexpected to hear of a dragon that likes fruit, is all. Next time we meet, I'll have an apple with me for you. Would you like that?" She smiled up at him happily, meaning the question as an olive branch offering, of sorts, one to make up for laughing the way she had.
